Is it ironic that...

The Australian government has been turning asylum seekers, who have arrived by boat, away from its shores and directed them to Papua New Guinea. Is this ironic given that Australia is a country itself ruled by people whose ancestors were immigrants, and who weren't turned away by the aboriginals?
